OK, after bashing my head against the wall I'm owning up. I reckon the V2 Window component is nice to look at but try and write ActionScript to talk to it's contents and you're gunna have some fun.
There's been some discussion about this already on Flash Coders and Peter Hall has already done a bit of work improving the positioning and content margins, but I'd like to see it do a better job than it does already.
The big thing it needs is a proper onLoad event rather than the hack identified by Martin Wood so that you can successfully modify content on the fly.

It's pre-release and has some bugs, but it's a slightly more powerful windowing schema I've been working on with OpenAMF folks amongst others:

i wrote a huge post for my weblog just going off on this very issue. then i decided that just writing about it calmed me down enough and deleted it. ;-)
this is absolutely insane how poor these things function.
maybe MX 2005 Enterprise Edition XP++ will be better... ;-D
