FarCry Core

FarCry Core is a web application framework for the Adobe ColdFusion development environment.

FarCry License Change Discussion Paper

The FarCry 5.0 release has been delayed. We're contemplating a significant licensing change and as a consequence we want to make the decision prior to making the release. Once we have resolved whether or not the license change is right for our community, we'll either release 5.0 under the current license, Common Public License 1.0 (CPL), or under the newly proposed dual-licensing scheme.

FarCry Picnik & Keyword Plugins

One of the great innovations of FarCry Core 4.0 (the Gonzales release) was the introduction of plugins. The FarCry concept of Plugins can be just about anything from simple changes in UI controls to complete applications. At the tail end of an eSeminar, I gave a sneak peak to a couple of my favourite plugins. Well worth a look if you have 10 minutes to spare.

FarCry 5.0 (Fortress) eSeminar Recording

With FarCry Fortress' imminent release, what better time to kick up your heels and catch up on what the FarCry community has been up to? From bare-bones installation right the way through to fully functioning application. If you haven't had time to download FarCry CMS, this eSeminar recording might just give you the encouragement to give it a whirl.

FarCry GSoC Washout

Tragically the Gods were not kind. Google are very open about the whole process and gave us a few minutes of "face time" to discuss the application. I've included a summary of the transcript from the public #GSOC channel. It was a very amicable chat so don't read any specific negativity into it -- beyond my own disappointment.

FarCry Interview on Sitepoint

Although it's better known as an open source content management system, FarCry is in fact a powerful framework for building ColdFusion applications. Geoff Bowers, CEO of Sydney-based Daemon and self-styled "benevolent dictator", lets us in on what makes FarCry tick.

FarCry Fortress Sneak Peaks

Tonight! If you want to kick back you heels and listen to an overview of FarCry there are several upcoming presentations that might be of interest. With the upcoming release of FarCry 5.0 (Fortress), these are the first opportunities to take a look at some of the latest features to come out of this vibrant community.

Google Summer of Code for ColdFusion?

Daemon is throwing it's hat in the ring for this years, "Google Summer of Code", in an attempt to get the FarCry code base onto the program. It would be a first for ColdFusion, and with any luck we might get some great projects off the ground. But we need help!

CFEclipse Dictionaries for FarCry Developers

One of the cool little unsung features of CFEclipse are dictionaries. Dictionaries are those little files that provide all the code hinting and insight for your CF tags, functions and scopes as you type. Daemonite Blair has been investigating clever ways to build dictionaries for FarCry Core and keep them automatically up to date.

FarCry: Shared Hosting Made Easy

The FarCry Fortress release (the upcoming FarCry 5.0) has the ability to install in a variety of additional configurations -- in particular under the webroot. This will make life a lot easier for folks deploying into shared hosting environments.

XStandard Rich Text Editor for FarCry

XStandard is the leading standards-compliant plug-in WYSIWYG editor for desktop applications and browser-based content management systems (IE/Firefox/Safari/Opera). And my favourite rich text editor to boot -- now available for FarCry.

FarCry CMS Bundle v4.0.9 Released

4.0.9 is a significant maintenance release incorporating a variety of minor enhancements to both the framework and associated plugins. The last bundle release was based on the 4.0.3 version of the framework, so if you haven't been keeping pace with the underlying framework updates here's a chance to deal with everything in one fell swoop.

Popularity of ColdFusion Frameworks

FarCry is getting increasingly popular since the 4.0 release. It's a mature product, in a commodity space so seeing that sort of traction is really motivating the Daemonites. It's interesting to compare the relative popularity of various ColdFusion framework Google Groups. Turns out FarCry tops the list despite playing second fiddle in many peoples perception.

FarCry 4.0.9: Scaffolds & WebTop Overview Skins

We've been hard at work on the maintenance branch of FarCry 4.0 which is supposed to be for bug fixes. However, its been hard not to throw in a few new features every minor point release. In 4.0.9 we've been a bit naughty, adding some really cool new features to the mix. Thought we'd slip these in prior to merging back to trunk for the start of 4.1.

FarCry 4.1: Roadmap for Fortress

The next release of FarCry Core is codenamed Fortress. The roadmap centers on refactoring the internal security model and strengthening the underlying web application framework. Hopefully there is plenty in here for everyone, users and developers alike.

FarCry: modBreeze Plugin Released

As part of the FarCry Inspire session for MAX, I put together a great little plugin to show-case just how easy it is to build things in the FarCry framework. Thought I might put together a few notes describing how it all goes together. The solution requires the CFPRESENTATION tag, so you will need ColdFusion 8 to make things work.

FarCry Inspire Session Notes & Codebase

Just following up from my MAX FarCry Inspire session. I've made the slide notes and entire code base of the demo available for download. I did my best to record the presentation and apparently that will be made available sometime next month.

FarCry: Birds of a Feather at MAX Chicago

Looks like I won't have to crash another Birds of a Feather at MAX Chicago -- FarCry now has its very own BOF: Monday, 8.30PM Room 176B. I'll be there for the whole session dishing out tid-bits on what's new and upcoming. Will also demo a variety of the new features that have been leaking into the current maintenance branch ;)

FarCry 4.0 Training Course Released

Daemon has released its FarCry 4.0 training course book under Creative Commons for personal use. That's 122 pages of documentation goodness for would be FarCry developers to peruse.

Inspire Session: FarCry Core is More Than Just a CMS

Been working on an entertaining demo of what FarCry Core is really all about; building web applications. If you're at MAX be sure to check out my Inspire session on Wednesday after lunch. I'll be around for the week, talking up ColdFusion and the whole FarCry caper.

modCaptcha: A Lylacaptcha Plugin for FarCry

Sparked by the desire to run my blog in FarCry, and being inundated with blog spam, I've cobbled together a nifty little plugin for FarCry called modCaptcha that uses LylaCaptcha to generate a captcha formtool.

MayoClinic.com Relaunches on FarCry 4.0

One of the largest FarCry sites in the world has relaunched on FarCry 4.0: mayoclinic.com. The daemonites are proud to have played some part in making this colossal online repository of medical know-how a success. Project lead, Phil Truesdale, highlights some of the benefits of moving to 4.0.

FarCry: Eureka Prizes Peoples Choice Awards

The daemonites have recently rebuilt the entire Eureka Science Prizes website for The Australian Museum. The web application was rebuilt from the ground up, leveraging the existing design, and tussling with the migration of existing data. We're seeing a fair bit of traffic now that the People's Choice Awards have opened up, and the site is getting regular exposure on the ABC.

FarCry Form Builder Plugin Released

Trond and crew at idl in Norway have released a great little form building plugin for the FarCry Framework, complete with user documentation. It leverages the nested tree model, allowing you to drop custom built forms directly into the site tree. Form posts are collected in the database and can be reviewed at any time. Nice little tutorial as well explaining how it was all put together.

FarCry Development Proceeding At A Blistering Pace

State of the Nation for FarCry Framework: FarCry rocks. Development since the release of 4.0 has been fast and furious. The more production sites released the more minor fixes, mods and enhancements have made it into the core.

Yxplorer: Crawl Around In Your ColdFusion Memory

Yxplorer is a Flashlet and accompanying component that allow you to drill down and explore your session, application and server scopes. Very nifty tool if you've been wondering what's in there. Yxplorer is part of the FarCry framework, but something that can be used on its own just about anywhere.

FarCry Formtools: Put the Fun Back Into CF Development

FarCry 4.0 introduces a revolutionary new way of developing ColdFusion applications, namely the "formtool". Formtools are a metadata-driven library of UI elements for display and editing. A couple of attributes can transform the functionality of your application. By way of example, take a look at how one line of code can add an image library to your application.

FarCry: Deploying Content Objects

FarCry does things a little bit differently to other frameworks. Why concentrate on generating componentry and code by introspecting a database table, when you could be doing the complete opposite.

webJamming Sydney: FarCry CRM on Show

Had another crack at webJam this month. But despite my success last time, not even a mention in despatches. Still the daemonites were out in force and fun was had by all. Plus we got to show off the latest on FarCry CRM, give away webDU tickets and rub shoulders with the upper echelon of Sydney geekdom.

Getting tinyMCE to play nice with dp.SyntaxHighlighter

dp.SyntaxHighlighter is a Javascript library that converts textarea form elements into pretty code highlighting boxes -- you can see examples on this page :) Unfortunately, the out of the box implementation of tinyMCE is going to give you some trouble.
