MacPorts: Installing Unix Bits

Embarked on finding the ultimate IRC client for my Mac and got a bit side-tracked getting that old stalwart XChat running under Leopard. Turns out this whole Unix on OSX caper is kind of fun -- got myself a copy of MacPorts and with some 4,500+ ports available, I'm installing Unix bits all over the place. Here's a quick run down of just how easy it all is.

Managing the host file on Leopard

Back in the days of Tiger (OSX 10.4) I use to manage hosts with the NetInfo Manager tool but alas this has seen an untimely demise in the Leopard (OSX 10.5) release. You can muck around with your local hosts file if you like but there are a couple of nifty tricks I've found useful.

Leopard Blue Screen of Death

Leopard... browse to your Windows colleagues over the network and you'll notice all the windows machines have a cute little computer terminal icon. Open up the "Flow" view in Finder and with a touch of magnification you'll find a host of little "blue screens". Macs are so cute.
